A Portuguese passport (Passaporte Português) is the official travel document issued to citizens of Portugal by the Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado (IRN) under the Ministry of Justice.
As a European Union (EU) passport, it grants holders the right to live, work, and travel freely across all EU and Schengen countries — and visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 190 countries worldwide.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to obtaining or renewing a Portuguese passport.
🧾 1. Eligibility and Validity
You must be a Portuguese citizen to apply for a passport.
Validity periods:
10 years — for adults aged 18 and over
5 years — for minors under 18
Portugal issues electronic passports (Passaporte Eletrónico Português – PEP) containing a microchip with biometric data (photo, fingerprints, and digital signature).

Before applying, prepare the following:
For adults:

Old passport (if renewing)
Proof of payment of the application fee
For minors:

Parents’ or guardians’ Citizen Cards
Parental authorization (both parents must sign)
Old passport (if renewing)

Bring your Citizen Card and any supporting documents.
Your photo, fingerprints, and signature will be taken at the office.
Pay the passport fee (by card or cash).
You’ll receive a collection date or tracking code.
Outside Portugal:

Your biometric data will be collected and forwarded to the IRN in Lisbon.
