Concerns About Monetization and Longevity

Okay, let me preface this by saying Dune Awakening Solari U4GM looks amazing — graphically and thematically. But I can’t help but be wary. MMOs live or die by their monetization strategy, and Funcom doesn’t exactly have a flawless track record. If this turns into another survival grindfest with microtransactions for quality-of-life stuff (inventory expansions, faster spice extraction, XP boosts), I’m out.

The trailer left a lot of room for speculation. We saw some building, some exploration, and glimpses of what looked like cooperative gameplay. But what’s the actual structure here? Are we looking at a persistent open world like Rust or Ark? Is there a central narrative, or is it player-driven?

The MMO space is crowded and hard to maintain. New World launched with a bang and fizzled out. Dune has the name and the potential — especially with the movie universe being so popular — but it needs substance beyond the visuals. Lore integration is key. If I’m just surviving and crafting with no connection to Dune’s political and religious drama, it won’t feel authentic.

I’d love to hear other thoughts. Is anyone else hesitant because of Funcom’s history or the general survival MMO burnout that seems to be setting in?
